Frail but still singing the blues -B.B. King captures the audience at last night’s Jazz à Juan concert... The rain droplets that sprinkled audience members were not enough to disrupt the festivities in Juan-les-Pins last night. Although the 51st annual Jazz à Juan festival had officially kicked off on the famous 14th of July, it was not until yesterday that the magic truly descended. 51st JAZZ A JUAN 2011 - PRESS FILE

After a few weeks in America, we set off for the festival of Antibes, in the South of France. We blew them away. In 1963, Miles Davis was in for a shock: In Antibes, an immense poster of me was stuck up near my hotel. I thought: what a world it is; I don’t get that in New York but here, thousands of people come especially to listen to you and treat you like a brother.

Another family reunion this year in Juan, honouring with pomp one of the greatest trumpet players in the history of jazz, who passed away twenty years ago. All the artists performing on the legendary stage in the pine grove will have a thought for Miles Davis, from Jamie Cullum ( I discovered the festival through recordings of Keith Jarrett and Miles Davis ) to Marcus Miller ( He taught me to be myself ), without forgetting of course those with whom he lived the great adventure Jazz à Juan : Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. And also all those who, at some point during their career, crossed the sunlit path of this blue note mutant. They will all come together again for this festival, an annual celebration.

Because Juan, as Joshua Redman said so well, is « a true festival, not a series of concerts, a real community which meets up each year in a particular place, at a particular time. Everyone is there sharing a same passion, living jazz physically. » On the main stage of course, but also all around, in the streets and during the "afters", where the jazz gains its true dimension : Juan-les-Pins, it’s not just a stage, it’s a legend for me: Juan-les-Pins, it’s what Carnegie Hall is to classical music. Every time I’ve heard Juan mentioned, it’s been the height of greatness of jazz. (John McLaughlin)

Wedding Blues - According to a report in the April / May 2011 Edition of the Riviera Reporter "So why do they honk? It’s the wedding season soon and on Saturdays especially you get reminded of this as convoys of cars take to the road carrying the newly married and their guests ... with much blaring of horns. An old French custom? Not exactly: it was started by jazz saxophonist Sidney Bechet when he got married in Juan-les-Pins."

There are many exceptional groups and solo artists. Contact Tourist Office. 11 Place de Gaulle, 06600 Antibes. Tel : 04 97 23 11 11.

The annual jazz festival (Jazz à Juan) takes place at Juan Les Pins in July. It is held in the Pinede (pine grove). It was in 1960 that the Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival was officially launched. Stéphane Grapelli played at the first festival. The town is now twinned with the French quarter of New Orleans, USA. The Pinede is between the Mediterranean and Le Provençal that was once a famous hotel till the 1960's and stood empty for more than 40 years and is currently being converted into luxury apartments.

The view from this open air theatre is superb, as in the photo above of Ahmad Jamal playing in 2006 with the Mediterranean backdrop and the coast running past Golfe Juan towards Cannes.

Jazz à Juan organisers hit the top

Jazz festival notes record pitch in sales

07.08.2008 / Building on the success of the previous year, the organisers of the Jazz à Juan festival in Juan-les-Pins have just received the results for this year’s festival – and its good news!

This year, an increase of 5% was noted in the number of paying visitors with a sale of, on average, 1753 tickets each evening. Only the youth ticket sales were down, decreasing from 5 to 2.5%, as the organisers chose not to apply a reduced price on the evening James Blunt performed.

On the other hand, the four evenings of the festival ticked all the boxes for jazz-lovers as more than 70% of the tickets were sold, particularly for the performances by James Blunt and Al Jarreau.

The first year with Internet booking was a clear success with more than 37% of the total ticket sales purchased from the comfort of festival goers homes at the click of a mouse.

The choice of performers this year has led many to chapeau the festival committee for their balanced programme of new stars, established artists and jazz legends, which undoubtedly helped the Jazz à Juan festival see one of its most successful years to date. Source The Riviera Times

Our correspndent Dick Suter attended the 2007 festival and reported "The Norah Jones concert was superb: not only did she sing and play piano beautifully but she has also added guitar to her repertoire. The evening was a huge success but, like most things that are especially good, flew past too quickly." 2007
